2018-19 One Book One College Choice Announced
The FYE/One Book One College Committee is thrilled to announce the One Book title for the 2018-19 academic year. The choice is Spare Parts: Four Undocumented Teenagers, One Ugly Robot, and the Battle for the American Dream by Joshua Davis. Copies of the book are available for check out in the library in both Waterbury and Danbury, and the movie is also available in Waterbury.
“In 2004, four Latino high school students won an underwater robotics competition sponsored by NASA and the Office of Naval Research. With little funding or experience, they beat out a field of college teams, including one from MIT. It was a classic underdog story with a made-for-Hollywood ending. In fact, a major motion picture recounting their victory will be released later this week. Yet, the reality was much more complicated. The teenagers from Phoenix lived in the United States illegally. Though clearly talented, they faced a future with limited options. A new book called “Spare Parts: Four Undocumented Teenagers, One Ugly Robot, and the Battle for the American Dream” tells their story.”- DianeRehm.org
The FYE/One Book Committee is comprised of NVCC faculty and staff. This year, the members are Lou Lombard, Elma Solomon, Kathy Taylor, Julia Petitfrere, Antony Wormack, Sam Johnson, Anne Mattrella, and Jaime Hammond. Choices are made based on the following criteria: books that will “stir discussion” and be enjoyable to read but also stress literary value, diverse perspectives, relationship to contemporary events, and appropriate rigor for the entire community.
