NVCC's International Center for the Arts Celebration

President Daisy Cocco De Filippis, Ph.D, the faculty, students and staff have much to celebrate over the academic and cultural contributions of the College’s 4th Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence, Aguibou Bougobali Sanou. On Wednesday, April 17, 2019, the College is hosting its annual International Center for the Arts Festival featuring an “Aguibou Celebration.”

International performer, Aguibou Bougobali Sanou has been teaching dance classes at the College since his arrival in August. From Burkina Faso, Mali and Ivory Coast, Africa, Aguibou is founder and choreographer of the Tamadia Dance Company in Bobo-Dioulasso, and several regional collaborative projects with companies based in Mali, Senegal, and Niger. He also founded and directed the IN-OUT Dance Festival in 2014 which annually has attracted more than 80,000 international participants.  He started African and modern dance at a young age. In 2008, strongly influenced by the works of prominent choreographers from the Global South, Salia Sanou and Akram Khan, he started developing a very personal approach of contemporary dance, mixing traditional Mandinka and contemporary dance repertoires, storytelling and strong elements of animism and spirituality. He actively worked to give African contemporary dance a strong identity and legitimacy in the global art world. His works have been shown in Burkina Faso, Morocco, Benin, Senegal, Mali,

The Celebration will be held in the Leever Atrium and Mainstage Theater in the Fine Arts Center on the Waterbury campus of NVCC. All events are open to the public. No registration is required.

11:15 AM – 11:45 AM   Drum Circle in Atrium- An epic jam session featuring Aguibou and his brother, Moussa (a drummer who lives in Italy). The brothers will teach basic beats to attendees and then lead participants.

11:45 PM – 12:15 PM     Dance Workshop with Aguibou Bougobali Sanou- An introduction to folk dance steps, celebrating dances that tell the story of the hunt for food- not for pleasure or sport - but, to sustain life. It is the story of the hunt, but also, the preservation of the environment.

12:15 PM – 1:15 PM       Symposium on Burkina Faso Traditions and Education- A survey of Burkina Faso culture and history, starting with the narrative of the kingdoms that, fifty years ago, would combine to become the modern nation that exists today. Costumes will be highlighted.

1:15 PM – 1:45 PM          Dance Workshop with Terpsichorean Dance Ensemble- A lesson in choreography by students in NVCC’s premiere dance troupe that reflect their personal creative voices and collective energy. Join in the fun!—no experience necessary.

5:30 PM – 6:45 PM          A ReBours (translation: “Countdown”) - A multi-dimensional performance featuring the artistry of Aguibou Bougobali Sanou that begins with the question: what remains of the role of the drum in contemporary society - from its sacred symbolism to its profane use? Today, the drums of the world (both literally and metaphorically), seem to announce the countdown to the end of time…A ReBours  offers a cocktail of dance, music, and voice, proposing a choreography that is both violent and fragile and always on the edge between mastery and explosion.

A ReBours is critical appraisal of States and their policies of confinement and marginalization of subordinate peoples. It is a voice advocating for the necessity of cultural diversity, while alerting humanity to the excesses that could lead to its loss.

A reception will be held immediately following that final performance. Naugatuck Valley welcomes the communities we serve to this international celebration of life though dance. Additional details and full schedule available at nv.edu/ica.
