The Power of Networking: NVCC Alumni Gets Jump Start on Political Career Thanks to NVCC Psychology Professor

NVCC alumni Dorian Lockett beams from ear-to-ear when he thinks about the NVCC Professor who served as a mentor and, “took an extra step to truly engage with the student.” It’s thanks to Psychology Professor Lawrence Venuk that Lockett got his introduction and interest in politics. He recalls that Venuk put his name in for the Connecticut’s Legislative Internship program and nominated him for the Christopher Love Award, a scholarship that commemorates a fallen Waterbury-area social activist. Lockett says that because of his internship, he was introduced to J. Brendan Sharkey, former Speaker of the Connecticut House of Representatives, and Majority Leader.

This October 23rd STEM education and careers event is free and open to the public

Like science? Considering pursuing an education or career in STEM? Join us on Wednesday, October 23, 2019 when NVCC hosts the Scott Lawrence Pond Annual Minorities in STEM Seminar where Dr. Ronald Mallett from the University of Connecticut will speak to students about his research on time travel, his journey to becoming a well-respected author, and the adversities he has faced as a minority in his path to become a well-respected physicist. The seminar will be held in Founders Hall, Community Room F101 beginning at 11:00 a.m.

Naugatuck Valley Community College Welcomes Congresswoman Jahana Hayes and Attorney General William Tong to Immigration Panel

NVCC President Daisy Cocco De Filippis, Ph.D., welcomed the Honorable Jahana Hayes, D-5th District, and Connecticut Attorney General William Tong to an Immigration Panel hosted on the Waterbury Campus of Naugatuck Valley Community College. The panel was the Capstone project prepared by a student from the Congresswoman’s Internship Program. A former teacher, and National Teacher of the Year in 2016, Hayes has never stopped teaching, mentoring. Her internship program is a hallmark of that legacy.

With the start of a new academic year, NVCC welcomed its eighth cohort of manufacturing students. The program was introduced by Joseph Defeo, Program Director for the AMTC. NVCC President, Daisy Cocco De Filippis, Ph.D., and Cyndi Zoldy, Executive Director for the Smaller Manufacturers Association (SMA) of Connecticut, Inc., followed with encouraging remarks.

On Wednesday, August 28, the AMTC at NVCC celebrated the annual Presidential Awards Ceremony, where high-performing manufacturing students from the evening cohort were recognized. This group, consisting of students in their second semester, will complete in December.

President Daisy Cocco De Filippis, Ph.D., the faculty and staff of Naugatuck Valley Community College hosted the annual orientation program to welcome new students and their families. The program began with Student Registration and a Continental Breakfast for students and parents. Academic, Administrative and Student Services were on hand in an open forum for student information.

Since 2005, the Washington Monthly has published their annual College Guide and rankings. The Guide is based on the contribution to the public good that colleges makes in three broad categories:

  • Social Mobility (recruiting and graduating low-income students)
  • Research (producing cutting-edge scholarship and PhD’s)
  • Service (encouraging students to give something back to their country).

President Daisy Cocco De Filippis, Ph.D., the faculty and staff of Naugatuck Valley Community College hosted an orientation program to open the Fall 2019 semester on the Danbury campus.  The college welcomed students, parents and families to a standing-room only crowd, with a separate meeting room for parents.

CREAR Futuros (College Readiness, Achievement and Retention) is a program developed by The Hispanic Federation (HF) to address the systemic barriers that prevent Latinos from earning a college degree. HF works with higher education partners to implement student retention and achievement initiatives that increase the percentage of Latino students graduating from college.

Naugatuck Valley Community College President Daisy Cocco DeFilippis, Ph.D. presented at the annual American Council on Education (ACE) Fellows Opening Retreat at the Marriot Hotel in Hartford. The annual week-long retreat focuses on learning goals in higher education. This year the program featured a segment dedicated to community colleges. Daisy Cocco De Filippis, Ph.D., President, Naugatuck Valley Community College (NVCC) and Mary Ellen Jukoski, Ed.D., President, Three Rivers Community College (TRCC) presented a panel on the value and the vital mission community colleges play in higher education in Connecticut and across the country.

NVCC faculty and staff make a difference in the community

Naugatuck Valley Community College hosted the United Way’s annual Stock the Pantry weigh-in at the Founders Hall Parking lot on June 21 where more than 18,000 pounds of food was donated. In addition, the dollars donated to Stock the Pantry will be used to purchase food, adding to the overall total. NVCC’s Development Office led the initiative with support from facilities and the entire college community.
