Naugatuck Valley Community College hosted a special evening of poetry featuring three local writers and poets at Confluencia on April 18 at the College’s Waterbury Campus. The evening kicked off with live music and refreshments and continued with an “open mic” featuring NVCC students who offered readings of original works as well as poetry and prose by noted writers.

NVCC’s Waterbury Campus Will Host VITA Site
For individuals who earn $54,000 or less, the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program will help those who need assistance preparing their tax returns. IRS-certified volunteers will provide free basic income tax return preparation with electronic filing of Federal and State returns.

NVCC hosts “Campus Conversation” providing information and resources for community
For the hundreds of individuals and families who will be relocating to Connecticut following the aftermath of Hurricane Maria, many will be challenged to find new jobs, bridge the gap to transfer existing skills to continue their careers, and acquire English as a second language or improve their proficiency in English.

Save the Date!
NVCC has multiple reasons to celebrate. This fall marks 50 years of higher education and community service as well as the formal opening of its newest building- the Founders Hall Center for Health Sciences. The ceremonies begin on Thursday, October 12, when the traditional NVCC Confluencia poetry reading will feature the presentation of the anniversary volume published by the College to honor this milestone. The Confluencia program also includes an open mic and readings from faculty and staff poets. It will open with a reception hosted by President Daisy Cocco De Filippis, Ph.D., who initiated the tradition of Confluencia nine years ago, when she first came to NVCC. The event is free and open to the public.

On May 20, a group of dance program students from Naugatuck Valley Community College performed as part of the “Art of Mental Health” celebration held at the Mattatuck Museum in Waterbury. Under the advising of Professor Megan Boyd, the NVCC Dance Program donated two dance performances to the Mattatuck Museum’s sponsorship of We Stand Youth Empowerment and Advocacy Group.

Naugatuck Valley Community College held the 36th annual induction ceremony for the National Honor Society Phi Theta Kappa on Monday, April 10. Faculty, staff, friends, and family celebrated the achievements of 146 student inductees. The event opened with a welcome by Professor Lisa Kaufman, an advisor for the organization. NVCC President Daisy Cocco DeFilippis, Ph.D. delivered the opening remarks commending the academic achievements of the students, Dean of Academic Affairs Irene Rios-Knauf, Ph.D., congratulated the recipients, and NVCC Professor of English Steve Parlato delivered the keynote address.

Naugatuck Valley Community College hosted its fifth annual Spring Open House on Sunday, April 23 from 1 to 4 p.m. in the Technology Hall Atrium where prospective students and their families visited NVCC’s Waterbury Campus. Faculty, staff, and student leaders were on hand to talk one-on-one with prospective students and visitors about applying to and attending NVCC. Campus tours were conducted throughout the day with stops at the Library, Academic Center for Excellence, Student Center, Advanced Manufacturing Technology Center, Hospitality Management Program, allied health labs, and other popular locations.

NVCC’s celebration of artistic multiculturalism launched college as “International Center for the Arts”
On a bright spring afternoon, Naugatuck Valley Community College students, faculty and staff, and Fulbright scholar-in-residence Felipe Karam gathered around a dozen colorful djembes and dunduns arranged in the College’s Leever Atrium. The African-inspired drum circle was the first of many interactive events at the debut of the College’s International Arts Festival on April 17. The festival also launched the College as an International Center for the Arts (ICA) for the greater-Waterbury community.

Naugatuck Valley Community College invites individuals to submit original work for possible inclusion in its 50th Anniversary Commemorative Book, which will be published in the fall of 2017. This book will honor the history of the College's beautiful campus and submissions from students, faculty, staff, alumni and the community are highly encouraged.

“Community” Art Show at University of Hartford Free and Open to the Public
Naugatuck Valley Community College Art Instructor Amanda Lebel and two of her students are showing their work at “Community,” a collaboration between the Hartford Art School and the Connecticut Community Colleges. The show highlights selected work from one faculty member and two students from each of the nine participating Connecticut Community colleges. The show, which will be on view from February 18-March 7, hosted an opening reception on Thursday, February 23 starting at 6 p.m. in the Donald and Linda Slipe Gallery at the University of Hartford’s Art School. The show is open to the public and admission is free.

Agenda Includes General Info Sessions, Campus Tours, and Financial Aid Workshops in Spanish
More than 85 Spanish-speaking juniors and seniors representing area schools like Crosby, Kennedy, Waterbury Career Academy, and Wilby gathered in Naugatuck Valley Community College’s Technology Hall Friday, January 27 in a special College-hosted visit aimed at accommodating and addressing the needs of English Language Learners. These local students spent the morning learning about some of the things to anticipate as they transition into the next chapter of their educations.

More than 100 community partners and NVCC academic leaders met at a leadership breakfast held at Naugatuck Valley Community College’s Waterbury campus today. The annual Leadership Breakfast “Responding to Our Mission” reflected the individual and shared goals of legislative, municipal, and community leaders in the 22-town NVCC service region.
