January, 2017: All-College Meeting

Good morning, and what a beautiful morning this is.  I believe our beautiful program says it all.  This is a new and beautiful year because it finds us happily situated in a new Campus in Danbury, a space that is thriving with love and life and learning.  Their enrollment numbers have exceeded our most aggressive projections. And because we are here, moved-in on time for a new semester in this gorgeously renovated Founders Hall-a new home for our Center for Health Sciences and for our Community and Economic Development programs. Both of these programs are top of the line in their own respective fields of studies; both are brought together in the splendor of this beautiful space as natural partners in the future of workforce in Health Sciences and Health Care for the communities we serve.

This space is designed to be communal. There are areas designed to invite students to congregate, such as the Student Lounge or Founders 126, our modern scale-up classroom which can be used for a lecture or group study with Mondo pads. It’s also a logical location for faculty development activities by the Center for Teaching and staff training by our Department of Human Resources.

The building also has a conference room which can support accrediting team visits, meetings of advisory groups and our Foundation, and certainly community events.  This Community Multipurpose Room where we gather our NVCC family this morning will see many happy days of engagement and discussion.  The laboratories are modern with cutting age simulation equipment and software.   The lecture hall across the way from this room seats 125 with a stadium design.  So much to celebrate and to give thanks for.

The college is doing well, as you will hear in more detail when we have the updates to be provided by different units in a bit.  All is going well.  Our finances are sound. Our programs are of high academic caliber, and all are engaged-faculty, students, staff and administration.  Thank you, everyone, for your very generous work.

I conclude by offering words of thanks to the many who have collaborated in this beautiful project:  the Honorable Governor Dannel Malloy, Waterbury Mayor Neil O’Leary, our General Assembly and state delegation, in particular Senator Joan Hartley and State Representative Jeffrey Berger. At the BOR, President Ojakian, VP for Facilities Keith Epstein and architect John Kramer kept it moving forward in very supportive ways. From the Department of Administrative Services Commissioner Melody Currey and Joel Baranowski and John Cavacas.  From the Morganti Group, CEO Nabil Takla and his staff.  Rich Brown, architect from Moser Pilon, Seamus Quinn, AZ Corporation, Construction administration.  From NVCC Provost James Troup, our wonderful students and faculty and staff.  A very special thank you to Dr. Peter Jacoby, our Capital Campaign champion, from my team Provost James Troup and Dean Waldemar Kostrzewa supported our fundraising efforts that, as you know, have been successful.  A special thank you to members of the NVCC Foundation for their guidance in the preparation of campaign documents, to so many in the Regional Advisory Council, including its fearless leader Mayor O’Leary, and the administration, faculty, staff and students at NVCC for their generous contributions to the Capital Campaign.

We will be planning an official ribbon cutting in the last week of September, to include donor recognitions and celebrations of two important College anniversaries: our 50th year since the founding of then Mattatuck Community College and 25 years since we were merged with Waterbury State Technical College to become Naugatuck Valley Community College. Stay tuned for invitations to planning groups for these celebratory events.

I conclude my remarks by inviting Ms. Keila Franco, President, SGA, Professor David Clough, President of the NVCC Faculty Senate, Dean Waldemar Kostrzewa and Provost Troup to join me as we light our fireplace for the first time.

As we do so, I invite you to read with me the poem included on the back of our program. It was selected to recognize--as the names on the plaque that will be placed by the fireplace will show--the sustained, generous, quiet and very intelligent support of both Wally and Jim who have given not only to this Capital Campaign but to so many other undertakings at the College.   Mil gracias y bendiciones.
