Security Officer Certification

Certificate Program    Approved for WIOA and VA funding.

Security Officer positions are available in many businesses such as security agencies, retail, hospitals, banks, housing complexes and construction. 

Public Act #04-192 (updated in Public Act #08-73) mandates that all state of Connecticut security officers complete an 8-hour training course for certification. Successful completion of this course will insure that the security officer is certified and eligible for security employment.

Our "Security Officer Certification" course satisfies the classroom training requirements for the state of Connecticut Security Officer Identification Card.

In just 8 hours you will learn some of the most important information to a successful career as a Security Officer.  Your experienced instructor is certified by the State of Connecticut to conduct this important training.  An overview of private security, basic first aid, public safety issues, search and seizure, use of force and basic criminal justice will be covered. The course includes lectures, small group discussion and simulated experiences. 

Participants are required to complete a written exam with a minimum passing score of 75%. Upon successful completion students will be issued a Security Officer Identification Card from the state of Connecticut.

Short breaks are included in the schedule but bringing a lunch is recommended.  Vending machines may be available with a limited selection of beverages and snack items.

Important Information

  • Students must bring a valid state of Connecticut issued photo ID to class.
  • You must be on time for this class and participate all day as part of the State of Connecticut training requirements. If you are late to class, you will not be permitted to enter and you will not receive a refund.  Please plan ahead.  We advise visiting campus or the Danbury Center in advance and locating your classroom and parking options. NVCC cannot be liable for traffic conditions.
  • It is suggested that you pack a lunch. Short breaks will be taken as part of the course schedule.
  • Upon successful completion of the Security Officer course you will receive a signed Security Officer Application and one set of fingerprints. Fingerprints will be done by a certified professional during the course and is included in the cost of the course.
  • The Security Officer Certification Card is issued by the State of Connecticut and requires additional payments. Please refer to the State of Connecticut Website for the current requirements and process.  This will also be reviewed in class. Three separate checks will be required. Course fees do not include the additional, approximately $170, paid to the State of Connecticut after the course completion. A background check is also required before a certification card is issued.

Security Officer positions are available in many businesses such as security agencies, retail stores, hospitals, schools, banks, housing complexes, and construction businesses.  The industry will continue to grow as companies are becoming more creative in their service and use of manpower.  The Connecticut Department of Labor (CTDOL) reports the average annual income for Security Guard is $26,924.  The CTDOL lists Security Guard as a Hot Job and states employment in this occupation is expected to grow about as fast as average, and the number of annual opening will offer excellent job opportunities.
