Naugatuck Valley Community College hosted U.S. Rep. Elizabeth Esty (CT-5), for the Congresswoman’s STEM Advisory Board meeting Monday. The STEM Advisory Board, which convenes four times per year, held its April 10 meeting in the Community Room at the College’s Center for Health Sciences at Founders Hall. Composed of education, labor, and business leaders, the STEM Advisory Board was developed to discuss federal legislation and issues facing the local STEM community. Following the morning’s meeting, Representative Esty toured NVCC’s newly opened Center for Health Sciences at Founders Hall where she was able to view the state-of-the-art facilities offered to NVCC students. Among the stops on the tour were the College’s new homecare lab, respiratory lab, clinical nursing resource center, and patient care simulation rooms.

NVCC President Daisy Cocco De Filippis, Ph.D., who was appointed to Congresswoman’s Board in 2015 said, “I am thankful for all Representative Esty does to support the success of our students.”

Representative Esty, a staunch ally for education, job-growth, and student success was impressed with the real-world environments and best-in-class technology and equipment that she saw on her tour of Founder’s Hall. “Educating and preparing our students for a 21st century economy is one of my top priorities in the Congress. Students and mid-professionals alike should have access to affordable, high-quality education that prepares them to enter high-paying careers in in-demand fields. Naugatuck Valley Community College (NVCC) has excelled in developing a long-term vision to improve diversity in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) industries and in preparing their students for life after graduation. I am proud to partner with NVCC to ensure that Connecticut residents from all backgrounds can unlock their full potential and embark on fulfilling careers.”
