About the Program

The NVCC horticulture program is a career-oriented degree program that leads students toward an Associate of Science in horticulture. Upon successful completion, students will be prepared for immediate employment within the green industry or to move on to a four-year institution, if desired. The program includes two full years of study and an appropriate, supervised cooperative work experience that places students in greenhouses, wholesale nurseries, landscape businesses and agricultural extension agencies. Graduates of the program find work in a variety of disciplines as greenhouse managers, landscape designers, arborists, pest management supervisors, plant propagators and more.

Certification pathways

Students who are looking to work within a shorter time frame can also choose from two professional certification programs in horticulture and landscape design. These certifications are specialized to prepare students with immediate training for green-industry careers without the general education requirements of the associate degree.

The Horticulture program is accredited by the Professional Landcare Network (PLANET) and is recognized as a re-certification site by the Association for Professional Landscape Designers (APLD).

Campus Gardens

The Gardens of Naugatuck Valley Community College are, above all, microcosms of the values we hold dear as an institution. Cultivated through many hours of hard work and labor, the Gardens are a product of intense study, understanding and application of theories learned. They are teaching laboratories that are open, transparent and beautiful and contribute much to make our College a humane and learned institution. Some have been built to support a particular horticultural concept, others to more closely examine plant species and three have been created in loving memory of colleagues past. Learn more
