Representative Participates in STEM Advisory Board Meeting, Tours New Center for Health Sciences

Naugatuck Valley Community College hosted U.S. Rep. Elizabeth Esty (CT-5), for the Congresswoman’s STEM Advisory Board meeting Monday. The STEM Advisory Board, which convenes four times per year, held its April 10 meeting in the Community Room at the College’s Center for Health Sciences at Founders Hall.

Math/science major Levi Reynolds will be part of Community College Aerospace Scholars Project

Levi Reynolds a math/science major at Naugatuck Valley Community College in Waterbury was recently selected as one of 348 community college students from across the U.S. to be part of the NASA Community College Aerospace Scholars project (NCAS). Last November, Reynolds was awarded one of 10 community college scholarships the NASA CT Space Grant Consortium awards yearly.

Searching for the right resources for your next research project just got a lot easier. That’s thanks to a dedicated team that helped the Max R. Traurig Library at Naugatuck Valley Community College move to a new search system interface called “NV Search.” Now, with just a few clicks and keystrokes, NV Search provides one-stop searching for books and e-books, videos, articles, and digital media for anyone who wants to search through the College’s vast collection or discover resources. For those on the go, the best part about the new interface is that it’s 100% mobile friendly meaning that users can access the system from any smart phone.

Financial Services Industry Summit Focuses on Careers and Curriculum

In an effort to keep its curriculum current for its students and to help close the skill gap in the state, Naugatuck Valley Community College turned to the experts on November 29th at its Financial Services Summit. Focused on industry careers and trends in the financial services sector, the summit was hosted by Financial Services firm NewOak at its Danbury, Connecticut, office. The summit provided an opportunity for professionals in the financial services industry to discuss the skills, educational background, training, and experiences that are most sought after in prospective employees.

NVCC Recognizes First Class in Advanced Manufacturing Technology from Abbott Tech

Eight students receive career-launching certificates

Eight Naugatuck Valley Community College adult students who completed their certificate requirements were recognized on December 14. The students are enrolled in a first-of-its-kind 22-month program in Advanced Manufacturing Technology held at Henry Abbott Technical High School in Danbury. The program equips them with skills to foster career growth in the manufacturing field. NVCC President Daisy Cocco De Filippis, Ph.D., Provost James Troup, faculty and staff from the College along with industry partners and Abbot Tech Principal Stacy Butkus were present to commemorate the achievement. The students embarked on the journey back in August of 2015 when NVCC launched a second cohort in its Advanced Manufacturing Technology Program at Abbott Tech.

Presidential Awards Ceremony Recognizes Achievements of Advanced Manufacturing Technology Students in Graduating Class of 2017

Thomaston Savings Bank Scholarship Awarded to High-Performing Student Along with Presidential Awards Presented to Other Top Performing Students

Fifty-two Naugatuck Valley Community College students who will graduate in January and May with certificates in Advanced Manufacturing were recognized Friday at the Fifth Annual Presidential Awards Ceremony. The event was held at NVCC’s Technology Hall on its Waterbury campus and sponsored by the Smaller Manufacturers Association of Connecticut (SMA). The students are enrolled in a two semester program in Advanced Manufacturing Technology. The program equips them with skills to foster career growth in the manufacturing field. NVCC President Daisy Cocco De Filippis, Ph.D., Provost James Troup, faculty and staff from the College along with industry partners and representatives from Thomaston Savings Bank were present to commemorate the achievement.

Naugatuck Valley Community College Confers One Thousand Three Hundred and Fifty-Nine Awards for the Fifth Consecutive Year

In a packed house at the Palace Theater, more than nine hundred students celebrated their graduation from NVCC. The graduates from 85 municipalities across Connecticut and eight states in total, ranged from youngest to oldest, 17 to 72 years of age. The eldest graduate received an associate degree in general studies and an associate degree in hotel management.  The largest field of study was represented by general studies in which 318 associate degrees were awarded. The Class of 2016 earned 1,359 total awards. This is the fifth consecutive year that NVCC celebrated the achievement of granting more than 1,000 awards.

NVCC Takes Top Honors in CTrides College Challenge

CTrides, which connects commuters with sustainable solutions to get to school or work, has honored Naugatuck Valley Community College for its participation in the Connecticut College Challenge, which seeks to find “green” rides for college students across Connecticut. More NVCC students pledged to take a sustainable ride during the first week of October than students at any other community college in the state.

Women in manufacturing was the focus of Naugatuck Valley Community College’s annual celebration on October 23 of Manufacturing Month in Connecticut. Women in Manufacturing—Inspire, Attract, Retain brought together industry leaders, educators, legislators and NVCC alumni to discuss the opportunities for women which exist in manufacturing and how to attract more women to the field. The event also featured tours of NVCC’s Advanced Manufacturing Technology Center led by current students and graduates.

This Year’s Community Meeting Surpasses 100 Partners and Participants

NVCC reports out on progress made on strategic plan and plans for future

On Friday, June 13 NVCC hosted its fourth annual Community Meeting, gathering partners and participants from the 22-town service region to contribute ideas for the growth of NVCC, its students and the region. This year’s meeting was the largest in the College’s history, for the first time surpassing 100 attendees.

AMTC Receives Grants for Manufacturing Recruitment

Representatives from the Precision Metalforming Association were on campus April 24 to confer the funds

The Precision Metalforming Association (PMA) presented Naugatuck Valley Community College with two $1,000 checks on Thurs., April 24, 2014 to support advanced manufacturing at the College.
