CTrides, which connects commuters with sustainable solutions to get to school or work, has honored Naugatuck Valley Community College for its participation in the Connecticut College Challenge, which seeks to find “green” rides for college students across Connecticut. More NVCC students pledged to take a sustainable ride during the first week of October than students at any other community college in the state.
What is your vision for Naugatuck Valley Community College ten years from now? What are the College’s most important goals? How do those goals align with NVCC’s mission? These were some of the questions asked at strategic planning sessions hosted by NVCC’s Institutional Planning and Administrative Councils during the first week of November.
Women in manufacturing was the focus of Naugatuck Valley Community College’s annual celebration on October 23 of Manufacturing Month in Connecticut. Women in Manufacturing—Inspire, Attract, Retain brought together industry leaders, educators, legislators and NVCC alumni to discuss the opportunities for women which exist in manufacturing and how to attract more women to the field. The event also featured tours of NVCC’s Advanced Manufacturing Technology Center led by current students and graduates.
The National Council for Marketing and Public Relations has honored Naugatuck Valley Community College with three Gold Medallion Awards for producing videos which promote the College. The NCMPR District 1 Medallion Awards recognize outstanding achievement in communications at community and technical colleges in the northeastern United States, eastern Canada and the United Kingdom.
Community leaders and partners from Naugatuck Valley Community College’s 22-town service region gathered for the College’s sixth annual Community Meeting on May 12, to discuss NVCC’s progress Toward A Splendid College, as outlined in its 2013-2016 strategic plan and to brainstorm enhancements to community engagement initiatives.
Naugatuck Valley Community College Professor of Accounting Scott R. Colvin, CPA has been honored with an “Educator of Excellence” award by the Connecticut Society of Certified Public Accountants.

NVCC reports out on progress made on strategic plan and plans for future
On Friday, June 13 NVCC hosted its fourth annual Community Meeting, gathering partners and participants from the 22-town service region to contribute ideas for the growth of NVCC, its students and the region. This year’s meeting was the largest in the College’s history, for the first time surpassing 100 attendees.
Secondary counselors, educators and leaders gather to learn about opportunities for students
Following up Sunday’s Open House, NVCC hosted the third annual Greater Waterbury Educational Leadership Forum for service region educators on Monday, April 30, 2014. The event is a project of Waterbury Mayor Neil M. O’Leary, who also heads the College’s Regional Advisory Council, and President Daisy Cocco De Filippis, Ph.D.
Representatives from the Precision Metalforming Association were on campus April 24 to confer the funds
The Precision Metalforming Association (PMA) presented Naugatuck Valley Community College with two $1,000 checks on Thurs., April 24, 2014 to support advanced manufacturing at the College. According to Joe Defeo, director of the NVCC Advanced Manufacturing Technology Center (AMTC), the grants will be used to boost promotion and recruitment initiatives.

The first official Alumni meet-and-greet took place on April 3 in the Technology Hall Dining Room. NVCC Professor Peter Cisek offered guests a free wine lecture with Senator Joan Hartley and a volunteer panel making sure everyone got a taste!
January’s All-College Meeting traditionally welcomes back faculty and students and sets a vision for the upcoming semester. This year, that vision extended to 2017, the projected completion date for the Founder’s Hall renovation and campus wide site improvements projects – two initiatives that promise to significantly improve the campus’s aesthetic and functional appeal for future classes of students.
Sandy Hook remembered during ribbon cutting
Naugatuck Valley Community College celebrated the opening of the campus’s first Inter-Faith Center on Mon., Dec. 9 with a gathering in remembrance of the young lives lost at Sandy Hook and a brief ribbon cutting ceremony.
Associate degrees to be awarded students seeking bachelor’s degrees
For the next several weeks, Charter Oak and Naugatuck Valley Community College staff will be reaching out to former students who have transferred 15 credits or more to Charter Oak, and earned at least 60 credits total, to offer an associate degree from NVCC ex post facto.
NVCC Team Pulls in Top Three Finishes
Three NVCC staff members competed in the Walk in Their Footsteps/Race for Awareness to benefit St. Vincent De Paul Mission of Waterbury, Inc. on Sat., Oct. 27. The three racers who comprised Team NVCC all placed in their age divisions: Christine Cocchiola-Meyer (1st), Mary Ann Fontaine (3rd) and Nancy Washington (3rd).
