Waterbury AmeriCorps Launch Highlights “Bridge to College” Growth

Evening Students Attend First Transfer Fair

The Center for Academic Planning & Student Success (CAPSS) recently hosted Naugatuck Valley Community College’s first annual Fall Transfer Fair for evening students. This semester’s event marked the first evening fair and proved immensely successful as CAPSS welcomed 38 universities from across New England and the Tri-State area.

Area Manufacturers Come Together for Tech Center Proposal

Local manufacturing and community leaders are teaming up to prepare for potential funding to build a manufacturing training center at Naugatuck Valley Community College. Proposals are currently being accepted from Connecticut community colleges to receive funding through House Bill 680: An Act Promoting Economic Growth and Job Creation in the State. The legislation would provide $17.8 million over two years for three colleges.

Students Reach Out Through "Project Homeless Connect"

Students, faculty, and staff from Naugatuck Community College (NVCC) have been involved with Project Homeless Connect since its start in 2008. Project Homeless Connect (PHC) is a national initiative sponsored by the U.S. Interagency Council on Homelessness, and is now implemented in over 100 cities across the United States as well as Canada, Puerto Rico and Australia.

NVCC Student Helps College Honor Veterans' Day

Approximately 25 members of the NVCC community gathered around the flag in the Poet's Circle to honor Veterans' Day on November 11 with readings and a chorus of "America the Beautiful." Josh Johnson, student, former veteran and member of the President's Circle, gave insight into the meaning of the holiday and shared his own interpretation as a veteran.

President De Filippis Honored with Habitat for Humanity “Community Builder” award

On October 22, President De Filippis was honored with the “Community Builder Award” by Habitat for Humanity of Greater Waterbury “for her efforts in building stronger communities through education which cross racial and financial boundaries.” The organization took note of the rising enrollment, graduation and retention rates at the College, particularly among lower income students, and the impact it has had “opening doors” for many who might not have otherwise entered college.

NVCC Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month

Author, educator and librarian Danilo H. Figueredo visited NVCC on Thursday, October 6, in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month. Figueredo presented two of his major literary contributions, “A Brief History of the Caribbean” and “Encyclopedia of Caribbean Literature” to an intimate crowd of 25 in the Max R. Traurig Library.

Naugatuck Valley Community College Expands Facilities to Better Serve Growing Enrollment in Danbury

NVCC has expanded its facilities at 183 Main Street via a brand new, beautifully furnished space on the third floor. The new space includes a spacious general education classroom, a tutoring center, a faculty office and a study lounge.

It’s Official: The Night Bus Is Coming!

Night service for Waterbury city buses is slated to start Monday, October 24, offering travel until midnight to riders throughout the City. President De Filippis, who initiated conversations about Waterbury’s bussing shortfall nearly three years ago, made it a point to credit local leaders, legislators, College officials and especially students, who rallied at City transportation meetings and self-imposed a transportation fee to help finance the initiative.
