Throughout the NVCC campus signs read “February 24, 2015- State Budget Appropriations Public Hearing- bus leaving 4:30 p.m., Parking lot D- All Students Welcome. Sign up in S-514. ”The students at Naugatuck Valley Community College, once again organized themselves to speak out on behalf of their College, and their concerns about the state’s higher education budget. On February 24, 2015 students from colleges and universities throughout the state flooded the Legislative Office Building to attend the Appropriations Committee public hearing about the higher education budget. Students came in large numbers to voice their concerns about potential cuts to the 2015-16 budget and its impact on the state’s colleges and universities.
Thanks to the thoughtful generosity of a supporter from Washington, Connecticut, the NVCC Foundation has launched an initiative to support student jobs on campus. Valerie Friedman, a friend and benefactor to the College led the initiative with a $5,000 contribution to start the campaign, an anonymous donor followed with a matching contribution. The plan will enable students who are not eligible for financial aid to work on campus between and after classes. Students who do not have to leave the campus for employment have greater academic success. Friedman, a close friend of the College who has been involved with student success programs in the past, noted that “Enabling students to stay on campus and earn what they need to complete their educations is a small price with an important payoff.”
Naugatuck Valley Community College has announced the expansion of their Certified Nurse Aide (CNA) Training Program to the New Milford Visiting Nurse Association (VNA) & Candlewood Valley Health & Rehabilitation Center. The new location of this program is intended to meet the job-training needs of the communities served by NVCC by making it more convenient for residents of the New Milford, Brookfield and Danbury areas to take the course. NVCC Director of Community and Economic Development, Laurie Hornbecker, noted that “this course is essential to meet the training needs of today’s health care professionals.”
President Daisy Cocco De Filippis, Ph.D., has announced plans for the College’s new Danbury Campus. The State Department of Administrative Services has completed its public search and negotiation for new campus space. The new Danbury campus, if final approvals are granted, will be located downtown at 190 Main St. This new location at Main and West Streets is across from the Danbury Public Library, and across the street from the current NVCC Campus. The entrance is on West Street, a few feet off Main Street. The building is owned by Joseph DaSilva Jr.
