January Health Care Career Education Information Sessions

Naugatuck Valley Community College is offering three free health care career education information sessions in Waterbury and Danbury this January. Students are invited to explore opportunities in nursing, respiratory therapy, physical therapy assistant, radiology technologist, nurse aide certification, patient care technician, phlebotomy technician, medical coding and billing specialist, health unit coordinator and financial assistance careers.

New President's Circle at NVCC

Membership into the President’s Circle at Naugatuck Valley Community College represents the highest honor a student may receive while matriculating at the college. These students represent a select group of outstanding achievers who serve as the college’s student ambassadors. Circle Ambassadors have the opportunity to attend major college events with the President and/or her Cabinet, and lend voice to their experiences as NVCC students.

George Frideric Handel's highly esteemed and tremendously popular work, "Messiah," will ignite the holiday season December 11 in St. Michael’s Church,25 South Street in Litchfield, and again on December 12 at the NVCC Fine Arts Center when NVCC Choir and WSO presents "Hallelujah!"

NVCC Partners With Union Savings Bank to Offer Free Green Technology Homeowner Series

Union Savings Bank has come on board as a leadership sponsor for Naugatuck Valley Community College’s seven-part instructional “Green Technology Homeowners Series,” which begins in January 2011. The sponsorship will enable the College to offer the series free of charge to the community.

Area Students Come to NVCC For Two-Day Technology Expo and Seminar

Teachers and their students, along with Waterbury area manufacturers benefited from a two-day combination technology expo and seminar entitled “Immerse Yourself in 21st Century Technology." The expo, which featured internationally renowned speaker Terry Wholers, was sponsored by the Regional Center for Next Generation Manufacturing to help motivate students toward manufacturing careers and to introduce them to the manufacturing technology programs at the college.

Veterans day is more than just another holiday: NVCC has celebration planned for Nov. 11

There are many holidays that are synonymous with military service and patriotism. There is Fourth of July, Armed Forces Day, Memorial Day and of course Veterans Day. Veterans Day is an annual holiday held ever November 11 that honors military veterans for their service and sacrifice. In other parts of the world it is also known as Armistice or Remembrance Day; for the anniversary of the signing of armistice that ended World War I.

NVCC Professor Venuk attends conference, lobbies Congress Psychology and lifelong learning are key topics discussed at event

In September, NVCC professor of psychology Larry Venuk attended the 2010 American Psychological Association’s Education Leadership Conference held in Washington D.C. As a member of Psychology Teachers @ Community Colleges (PT@CC), Venuk traveled to the conference to hear speakers discuss psychology and how it relates to lifelong learning, preparing to care for soldiers returning from conflicts, unemployment and mental health as well as learning techniques for how to lobby Congress.

Helping the Less Fortunate: SGA Sponsors Food Drive

Clients of the Saint Vincent DePaul Mission will not have to worry about their next meals for a while thanks to a NVCC student government sponsored food drive. Through the generous support of students and staff food was loaded into the mission’s van for direct transport to the Baldwin Street soup kitchen. “The food drive was a great success,” said SGA President Lara Chamberlin, “We really want to thank everyone who participated.”

NVCC Participates With Community Partners in Project Homeless Connect at Waterbury Armory

We all take it for granted that we will have a warm home to go to each night, food on our table and the ability to purchase all the things we need to get through our day. These daily things are luxury items for the homeless people that reside in abandoned buildings, cars and tent cities around greater Waterbury.

English as a Second Language (ESL) Students Celebrate Community Night

Every Fall semester, the ESL program asks its students to share their talents with the rest of the ESL and NVCC community. After weeks of rehearsing for singing, dancing, poetry reading and musical instrument playing with their ESL professors, the entire ESL community joins together with family and friends to “strut their stuff” on stage.

A Garden to Remember Professor Eugene Wisniewski

Waterbury, Conn. - On Friday, October 29, Naugatuck Valley Community College held a dedication ceremony for the Eugene L. Wisniewski Japanese Memorial Garden. The garden was created by horticulture student Regina DelRossi to memorialize Professor Wisniewski and help celebrate his life and contributions to the College.

NVCC Danbury Center Draws a Large Crowd to Ribbon Cutting

NVCC unveiled its new space at the corner of Main and Liberty streets Tuesday, space that includes a nursing classroom, computer classroom, three general classrooms, offices and other space. The college has grown 20 percent in the last two years in Danbury to a headcount of 623 students, explained President De Filippis. (Contributed by DanburyPatch)

Three NVCC Students Invited to Visit NASA This Fall!

Three Naugatuck Valley Community College students have been selected to travel to NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama, November 3-5, 2010, to participate in a three-day on-site event. Bryan Alvarado and Nicole Guglielmo of Waterbury and Joshua Milas, Newtown, have been selected among 89 community and junior college students from across the nation to be part of the National Community College Aerospace Scholars program.

Great Gospel Music, a Tribute to Old-Time Radio Shows, Plenty of Family Humor Oct. 22

Come to Naugatuck Valley Community College to view a onetime only performance of “The Prodigals,” a comedic play by award-winning playwright Professor William H. Foster III that good-naturedly teases out ideas about religion, specifically through the setting of the Baptist church. The play will be performed on Friday, October 22 at 7 pm with a suggested donation of $10.
