NVCC Recognizes Outstanding Achievement at Women’s Tea and Positively Male Recognition Awards

Spring marks the time for Naugatuck Valley Community College to recognize outstanding achievement by students who have overcome significant challenges. The annual Women’s Tea ceremony is a traditional afternoon tea celebrating women who have overcome adversity and found success at NVCC.

NVCC President Daisy Cocco De Filippis, Ph.D. opened the annual celebration with remarks about the progress of the ten student honorees: “it is particularly important this March, 2017, to celebrate the resilience of spirit and achievements of intellect of this radiant group of women who have overcome so much and have found a path to education,” said President De Filippis. The honorable Hilda E. Santiago, Deputy Majority Leader and State Representative of Meriden’s 84th Assembly District reflected on her career as a politician and the personal and professional challenges she’s overcome in an inspirational keynote speech.

On Friday, March 24, the College hosted the “Positively Male Image Awards” showcasing similar achievement by the male students at NVCC. Inspired by the President’s High Tea for women, the Fourth Annual Positively Male Image Awards honored a small group of male students recognizing the spirit, triumph, commitment, and industrious zeal among NVCC’s enterprising male students. “In today’s society, there is an unfair image cast upon our young men.  Often times this image fails to mention hard work, perseverance, and academic commitment.  The Positively Male Image Awards allows for NVCC to showcase a select few males on campus that exhibit the academic commitment, resiliency, and fortitude in the classroom.  It is truly an honor to present these men with this award and we wish them the best of luck in their future endeavors,” said NVCC’s David Celotto, its Bridge to College Division Director.

The Positively Male Image Awards were sponsored by the College’s President and the Male Encouragement Network (M.E.N.), an on-campus collaborative of male students who are focused on being successful. Together with the support of NVCC faculty and staff, M.E.N. work together to find ways to achieve their goals.
