New England-based writers Hanna Perlstein Marcus and Elisabeth Petry will be featured speakers at Naugatuck Valley Community College’s Writer’s Conference on April 6. The theme of this year’s conference is “Sharing the Passion.” Perlstein is the author of Sidonia’s Thread: The Secrets of a Mother and Daughter Sewing a New Life in America.  Her autobiographical memoir tells the story of a mother and daughter who immigrate to Springfield, Massachusetts, after being displaced from Germany following World War II. Writer Elisabeth Petry, a native of Old Saybrook, Connecticut, will be discussing the craft of writing along with her 2009 memoir, At Home Inside: A Daughter’s Tribute to Ann Petry.  Ann Petry was an American novelist who became the first black woman writer with book sales topping a million copies for her novel The Street.

“New England, and particularly Connecticut seems to be a wellspring for writers. To give new writers and advanced writers an experience extraordinaire is my hope,” said William H. Foster III, a Professor of English at the College.

“I am so grateful for the leadership of Professor Bill Foster in bringing many intellectual and cultural conversations to the campus. I am very honored to welcome these talented writers to NVCC,” said College President Daisy Cocco De Filippis, Ph.D.

The conference will include panels, readings, book signings, and an open mic that begins at 3:00 p.m. The conference is free and open to beginner and experienced writers. Register today by emailing:
