Julia de Burgos Centennial Celebration & Symposium Set, Oct. 15

Event date: 10/17/2014 Export event

Naugatuck Valley Community College, The Dominican Studies Association, The CUNY Dominican Studies Institute (CUNY DSI), The Office of the Associate Dean for Community Relations, Hostos Community College, The Latino Artist Round Table (LART) & Capital Community College invite you to join a centennial celebration of the life and writings of Julia de Burgos (1914-1953), arguably one of the greatest poets native of Puerto Rico. In her honor, the College will host a writer's symposium Oct. 15, 2014 to lead off Hispanic Heritage Month events at NVCC and welcomes the submission of proposals for papers to be read.

Papers focusing on the poetry and writings of de Burgos are welcomed. Additionally, approaches to understanding the challenges she faced in terms of the situation of women, the political struggles in Puerto Rico and the Caribbean, and the conditions of Latinos living in New York, are encouraged.

For consideration, an abstract of no more than 300 words should be sent to Beth Monchun at bmonchun@nv.edu by Fri., April 25, 2014. More details are available here.

According to Sherezada (Chiqui) Vicioso, general coordinator of the Dominican Centennial Julia de Burgos Committee, de Burgos deeply loved the Dominican Republic, which she could not visit during the Trujillo dictatorship, and was a writer who set new standards in poetic discourse of the Caribbean.

Because of her pioneering scholarship in Dominican women’s studies, President De Filippis was invited by the Committee to provide the keynote at their international seminar, “Our Julia,” held at the Pedro Henríquez Ureña National Library, Santo Domingo, D.R. on Feb. 5.

“Julia de Burgos exemplifies truth, beauty and courage,” described NVCC President Daisy Cocco De Filippis, Ph.D. “Her lyrical poetry where the Caribbean sea and our islands exemplify a woman’s quest for self-definition and full personhood are some of the most beautiful ever written. Yet her voice is strong as it finds the words to define a new way of being. She says: I am strength, I am life and I am woman.”

On Feb. 26, President De Filippis also provided a bilingual lecture, “To Be or Not to Be: Remembering Julia de Burgos, Caribbean Citizen and Sister in the Diaspora” at Eugenio María de Hostos Community College in New York.

President De Filippis is the first Dominican president of an American institution of higher education and as president of NVCC, she has worked to bring international culture to the college and to set the framework for an International Center for the Arts, which she hopes will be well-established in the next 2-3 years.

“I am delighted to have Naugatuck Valley Community College participate in a Connecticut Centennial Celebration that will involve cultural activities in other sister institutions as well,” said President De Filippis. “Thus far Eastern Connecticut State University, Capital Community College and Quinebaug Valley Community College are teaming with us to bring cultural activities to our students, faculty, staff and the communities we serve.”
