NVCC Welcomes Students to New Academic Year at Danbury and Waterbury Campuses

President Daisy Cocco De Filippis, Ph.D., the faculty and staff of Naugatuck Valley Community College hosted Orientation programs to open the Fall 2017 semester. In Danbury, the college welcomed students, parents and families to a standing-room only crowd. In Waterbury over 500 students and their families filled the Mainstage Theater.

Both programs featured welcoming remarks by President De Filippis. Leaders of resources for student success including the Library, Academic Center for Excellence (ACE), Center for Academic Advising and Student Success (CAPSS), Financial Aid, Women’s Center, and the Student Government were present to offer support and perspective.

Director of Student Activities, Karen Blake organized the events at both campuses to support students with a warm welcome and informative introduction to NVCC.

President De Filippis reminded the students, “Please begin your semester mindful of the need to engage in the learning process and plan to use the degree or certificate you will earn, and all the knowledge and skills you will attain to contribute generously and in meaningful ways to the communities you inhabit and to the larger world family. We are all expected to make this a better world for our children and our children’s children, and for all who come after us. Enjoy widening your circle of compassion and action! NVCC is your entrance into a better life.”

Through a collaboration between Academic Affairs and Student Services to promote awareness of the U.S. Constitution, Naugatuck Valley Community College hosted its second annual “Constitution Trivia” on October 3, 2017, in Café West. Presented in a game-show format punctuated with the musical theme from Jeopardy, the event featured questions about the U.S. Constitution. Keeping with the 18th century tradition of our founding fathers, the contestants and game hosts wore the traditional white wigs (sans powder). During the early history of the United States, the court dress of judges and practicing lawyers closely mirrored British court dress of the 18th century; both wore white powdered wigs and (typically) black robes.

NVCC Hosts Dominican Activist to Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month

For the first time in forty years, Diputado Nacional (National Congressman) Fidelio Despradel visited the United States, making NVCC his first stop. Considered a senior statesman in the Dominican Republic, he is recognized as a hero for his continuous fight on behalf of the rights of the poor. His tireless advocacy for the construction of a modern Dominican Republic, based on tolerance and human rights principles, began with the Revolution and the War of April 1965, and continues today. He has sustained a life of sacrifice, including incarceration as a member of the underground movement designed to overthrow the government of then Dominican Dictator Rafael Leonidas Trujillo.

Naugatuck Valley Community College Preparing Festivities to Celebrate 50 Year Anniversary and Ribbon Cutting of the New Center for Health Sciences

Save the Date!

NVCC has multiple reasons to celebrate. This fall marks 50 years of higher education and community service as well as the formal opening of its newest building- the Founders Hall Center for Health Sciences.  The ceremonies begin on Thursday, October 12, when the traditional NVCC Confluencia poetry reading will feature the presentation of the anniversary volume published by the College to honor this milestone. The Confluencia program also includes an open mic and readings from faculty and staff poets. It will open with a reception hosted by President Daisy Cocco De Filippis, Ph.D., who initiated the tradition of Confluencia nine years ago, when she first came to NVCC. The event is free and open to the public.
