On Monday 9/11/2017, the InterFaith Center and the Newman Club of Naugatuck Valley Community College lead a memorial service at the flagpoles on the Waterbury Campus.  

Emceed by Master of Ceremonies, Daniel Matthews from the Campus Ministry for the Archdiocese of Hartford, the program began with introductory remarks by NVCC President Daisy Cocco De Filippis, Ph.D. who reminded us that we must never forget September 11.

Naugatuck Valley Community College Honored with Math Science Grant to Support Collaboration with Crosby High School

The U.S. Department of Education has notified NVCC that their US DOE Math/Science Upward Bound (UBMS) grant application to support students from Crosby High School has been selected for funding.  The grant is a 5-year grant award in the amount of $263,938 per year.  Titled “Crosby High School Project S^3, STEM Students Succeed,” it will provide Bridge-to-College programs and services.

Dance is the theme for the October calendar of the International Center for the Arts at Naugatuck Valley Community College. In collaboration with the Connecticut Dance Alliance, the College will feature an Exhibition called “Connecticut Dances: A Visual History” from October 9 through October 22 in the Ruth Ann Leever Atrium in the Fine Arts Center on the Waterbury campus.

Constitution Trivia Premiers in Second Annual Production with Traditional Wigs and Jeopardy Theme

Through a collaboration between Academic Affairs and Student Services to promote awareness of the U.S. Constitution, Naugatuck Valley Community College hosted its second annual “Constitution Trivia” on October 3, 2017, in Café West. Presented in a game-show format punctuated with the musical theme from Jeopardy, the event featured questions about the U.S. Constitution. Keeping with the 18th century tradition of our founding fathers, the contestants and game hosts wore the traditional white wigs (sans powder). During the early history of the United States, the court dress of judges and practicing lawyers closely mirrored British court dress of the 18th century; both wore white powdered wigs and (typically) black robes.

NVCC Hosts Dominican Activist to Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month

For the first time in forty years, Diputado Nacional (National Congressman) Fidelio Despradel visited the United States, making NVCC his first stop. Considered a senior statesman in the Dominican Republic, he is recognized as a hero for his continuous fight on behalf of the rights of the poor. His tireless advocacy for the construction of a modern Dominican Republic, based on tolerance and human rights principles, began with the Revolution and the War of April 1965, and continues today. He has sustained a life of sacrifice, including incarceration as a member of the underground movement designed to overthrow the government of then Dominican Dictator Rafael Leonidas Trujillo.

Save the Date!

NVCC has multiple reasons to celebrate. This fall marks 50 years of higher education and community service as well as the formal opening of its newest building- the Founders Hall Center for Health Sciences.  The ceremonies begin on Thursday, October 12, when the traditional NVCC Confluencia poetry reading will feature the presentation of the anniversary volume published by the College to honor this milestone. The Confluencia program also includes an open mic and readings from faculty and staff poets. It will open with a reception hosted by President Daisy Cocco De Filippis, Ph.D., who initiated the tradition of Confluencia nine years ago, when she first came to NVCC. The event is free and open to the public.

NVCC Students Celebrate Back to School by Doing Good for the Community

Members of the Naugatuck Valley Community College Student Government Association (SGA) took advantage of the energy around the opening of the fall semester to support the United Way and the Special Olympics. On Monday, before the official first day of fall classes, the students volunteered at the Special Olympics Golf Tournament at Waterbury Country Club. They staffed the registration tables, organized the giveaways and helped participants through the course from their station on the 8th hole.  They also sold raffle tickets for gift cards to benefit the Special Olympics.

President Daisy Cocco De Filippis, Ph.D., the faculty and staff of Naugatuck Valley Community College hosted Orientation programs to open the Fall 2017 semester. In Danbury, the college welcomed students, parents and families to a standing-room only crowd. In Waterbury over 500 students and their families filled the Mainstage Theater.

Naugatuck Valley Community College Faculty Prepare for Academic School Year by Participating in the Barnes Seminar

The Barnes Seminar is a two-and-a-half day residential program built on the Great Teachers’ Movement model.  It is broadly interdisciplinary and inter-generational; the workshops allow faculty to share teaching challenges and successes and in the process identify innovations in teaching.  Barnes is one of the longest-running Great Teachers Seminars nationally. Since its inception in 1987, it has served as a foundational professional development program sponsored by the Connecticut Community College’s Center for Teaching.

On Monday, Aug. 21, the solar eclipse dazzled viewers across the United States. At NVCC, students, faculty and staff gathered on the plaza to watch as the moon’s path crossed the sun’s, casting a shadow on Earth.

NVCC’s Strong Curricula in Engineering Technology, Nursing and Allied Health Earns Enthusiastic Accreditation and Nearly Perfect Pass Rates

The Electronic Engineering Technology (EET) and the Mechanical Engineering Technology (MET) programs at NVCC stood tall against the measuring arm of ABET, Inc.  Last fall NVCC President Daisy Cocco De Filippis, Ph.D., Provost and Senior Dean of Administration, James Troup, Dean of Academic Affairs, Irene Rios-Knauf, Ed.D., STEM Division Director, Peter Angelastro, Ph.D., Electronic Engineering Technology (EET) Program Coordinator, Kristen Dagan McGee, Mechanical Engineering Technology (MET) Coordinator, Narendra Sharma, Ph.D., NVCC EET and MET Industry Advisory Board Members, EET and MET alumni, faculty, staff, and students hosted the ABET reaccreditation site visit team from October 9-11.  ABET, Inc. is a non-governmental organization that accredits post-secondary education programs in applied sciencecomputingengineering, and engineering technology.  A federation of 35 professional and technical member societies representing these fields, ABET, Inc. reviews curriculum for accredited programs. The official results of last fall’s visit have arrived.  No weaknesses or deficiencies were noted by the visiting team for either the EET or the MET programs, and reaccreditation means good news for the College administration and the students at NVCC.

One of the best things about leading the College newspaper is the postcards and letters from our students. The Tamarack advisor, Associate Professor Steve Parlato, recently shared a very animated postcard from an alumnus who is thriving in Hollywood. Students from local high schools including Crosby, Kennedy, Wilby, Waterbury Career Academy, Waterbury Arts Magnet, and Kaynor Technical High School started academic enrichment programs sponsored by GEAR UP and the Waterbury Public Schools at the Waterbury campus of Naugatuck Valley Community College (NVCC) today.

GEAR UP Students from Local High Schools Practice Community Outreach and Cultural Celebration

GEAR UP students enrolled in a special summer session of NVCC’s Human Services/Pre-Social Work course, and visited the Saint Vincent De Paul Shelter and the Waterbury Hospitality Center.  The students toured the Shelter and brought health and beauty aids to the patrons.  At the Waterbury Hospitality Center they engaged in an overview of how the Center is run, and distributed pastry to the patrons. This group of GEAR UP students participated in the activities that make up the abbreviated summer session course giving them the opportunity to experience work in the field of Human Services.

NVCC’s Short-term Job Training Programs Offer an Opportunity for Change

Naugatuck Valley Community College (NVCC) is hosting a series of free information events for everyone interested in workforce-ready programs. These information sessions provide participants with a chance to explore the numerous short-term job training programs that are available at NVCC.  Programs range from 8 hours to 15 months in length and have both day and evening schedules; many offer State or Professional Certification opportunities. The College offers payment options and may be able to refer potential students to resources for tuition and fees.
